Top 5 Reasons to Check Out AMC’s Preacher

Preacher just ended it’s first season on AMC. If you haven’t heard of it, let me give you some background. It is an adaptation of the comic book series created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, and published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. The stories main character, Jesse Custer, is a former outlaw turned preacher that returns home to West Texas to take over his dad’s church. This was his father’s dying wish. Jesse’s mission, however, becomes twisted when his body is overcome by a cryptic force gives him a strange and unpredictable power. Together with hell-raising ex-girlfriend Tulip and Irish vagabond/vampire Cassidy, the preacher-in-training embarks on a journey to find God in a world inhabited by holy, hellish, and everything-in-between characters. Now here are the five reasons you need to watch.

  1. Production– This series is dark, but surprisingly comedic. I’m sure a big reason for that is the Executive producers include Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”), and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (“Superbad,” “Neighbors”). Although the themes are sometimes heavy, the light moments make it much more enjoyable.
  2. Story– This is NOT another show about superheroes. The Preacher has powers, but he is very flawed. His past is troubled, and although he wants to do good, he still considers and sometimes carry’s out evil actions. The writing is excellent. All the characters are imperfect, some have major issues, but tend to be very interesting and real.
  3. Acting– This series stars Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, and Joseph Gilgun. Not exactly household names. Neither is the rest of the cast, but it doesn’t matter. As I just pointed out the script is strong, but this cast really holds it together. Each one making you love, hate, and fear them.
  4. Timing– Our culture is currently at a stage where we know more than we ever have about ourselves. At the same time, there are still age old questions that haven’t been answered. Where are we from? How were we created? Why are we here? Preacher explores all these questions, and gives some surprising answers that we aren’t used to seeing in fantasies.
  5. Uniqueness– AMC has really transformed what we expect from television shows. Mad Men led the way, and although Preacher is nothing like it in theory, the idea is very unique. Stories are told and retold, but new ideas are a premium, and hard to come by. That is where this show really excels, so check it out! You won’t be disappointed.
