It Really Is The Small Things That Make a Marriage Work

According to a post from Psychology Today, based on research by psychologists John Gottman and Janice Driver, responses to small bids for attention throughout the day over the long haul can be more meaningful – and healthy – for a relationship than going all out with big, grand gestures.

They claim a happy relationship is based on dozens of daily shows of attention to a partner – simple things like a smile, a nod or a grunted yes.

You can respond to your partner in one of three ways when interacting during the day.

  1. Ignore them “turn away”
  2. Express irritation “turn against”
  3. Replay lovingly “turn towards”

According to the research, 86% of the couples that turned towards each other stay married, while couples who got divorced had a 33% turn towards rate.

It’s a great read and just might have you rethink how you interact with your partner – check it out here.
