A Dads Beats Wireless Headphones Review

One thing I’ve noticed about buying gifts for my son as he’s gotten older is that the number of things he’s asking for is getting much smaller.  This should be a good thing, right?  Wrong…

While he’s asking for less, the cost of what he’s asking for is rising quickly.  Enter Beats Headphones.  When he asked for his first pair last Christmas from my parents, I chuckled a bit until I found out how much they cost.  I couldn’t believe phones should cost that much.  I pretty live and love the headphones I get with my iPhones, so I just had a hard time understanding why headphones should cost over $50, much less over $100.

I really thought we were going to be getting something that just looked cool and sounded ok, I mean, how much better could they really be?

To my surprise, they sounded damn good.  I mean like I wanted a pair good for working out or mowing.  I’ve always noticed with high end car audio speakers you can hear sounds that you don’t normally hear, which seems to be the case with beats headphones.

The website doesn’t really go deep into technical details, basically offering a bunch or marketing jib jab “Immerse yourself in an emotional sound experience. The Solo2 Wireless has a dynamic and wide range of sound with a natural clarity. The ear cup padding buffers outside noise, bringing you closer to what the artist intended you to hear. Regardless of what kind of music you’re into, you will feel the crisp, balanced sound in your Solo2 Wireless.”

Customer reviews on the beats site back up what I was hearing, with an average ratting of 4.3 out of 5.  On the internet reviews are also high, so it’s clear people really enjoy the sound of the beat headphones.  Again, I’m just not sure how.

So doing more research online, it seems like a lot of the difference comes from the digital recording or the music and how the beats headphones translate back the recording into the actual physical vibrations in their headphone speakers.  How Stuff Works Tech had a good article on the subject, noting 5 beats patents, but again, short on technical details, which they note.

In the end, it looks like Dre tested over 150 variations of the headphones before he found the right sound, put together by Silicon Valley-based industrial designer Robert Brunner and colleagues.

In the end, I’m a big duck theory guy.  If it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, swims like a duck…well, you get the idea.  In this case, beats headphones sound amazing and my son loves them.  Whether he’s listening to music on his phone or, gasp, spending way too much time watching YouTube, I don’t have to hear some of that crap when he’s sitting next to me, so win win.

My one recommendation for dads is to make sure you test the sound levels and discuss that with your kids, too loud and you can cause hearing problems, both long term physical and short term, hey son, it’s time to take out the garbage chore related ones.

Check them out on the internet below, or go to your local retail shop of choice.  Hell, even Walmart carries them now!
